Searching for a job is a daunting process, and it does not always go smoothly. After numerous applications submitted, interviews held, and rejection letters received, it is okay to feel some discouragement. This is a common feeling whether you are a new college grad, career changer, or more experienced planner looking for something new. The first thing to remember is there is a position out there for you and you will find it. Be patient. While being patient isn’t always the easiest to do, here are some other tips for how to rejuvenate yourself when you are feeling discouraged.
Take a Break
It might not always be an option due to financial constraints, but if you can, take some time to recharge. Let yourself rest, relax, and refresh so you can come back to the job search with fresh perspective. This is a smart path to take in anything you are discouraged about. You can spend this break going outside and taking a walk, or working on a hobby like music or painting. Spending time not thinking about searching for a job will help relieve some of the stress you may be feeling.
Don’t Take it Personally
Not taking rejection personally is one of the hardest things to do as rejection is a firm saying they don’t want you, but try not to take the rejection personally. Remember, rarely is someone going to only apply to one job and get hired. Competition is fierce especially for the entry level positions in fee-only RIA firms. You are not alone. Get back up, and let the rejection fuel you. Remind yourself why you are joining the profession and don’t lose sight of that. You are applying to these positions to reach your ultimate career goal, and the path to get there will not be smooth.
Build your Knowledge Base
Let the job search process build your knowledge base. You are going through many interviews, and each one is an opportunity to learn something new. After an interview, write down a couple of things that you learned about the profession, the firm or the interviewer. While you might not get the job, the information gained can help you later.
Adjust your Application Materials
After taking time off and allowing yourself to reflect, look at your resume and cover letter and see if there is tweaking that can be done. Maybe there is a typo that was missed, or something that was worded in a way that isn’t coming across as intended. Have someone else look at your resume and provide feedback. While it may not be the reason you are getting rejected, it could be, so adjust your application materials before you continue applying.
Apply for the Right Positions
Now that you have the materials to continue applying, make sure you are applying to the right positions. Firm owners do not appreciate it when candidates blindly apply for positions that they aren't qualified for. For example, if the position is asking for 5 years of experience and you have 5 months, the hiring firm probably is not going to grant you an interview. If you need to adjust your standards, and consider applying to something that might not be your dream job, but has a clear path to what your dream job is. Get your foot in the door and pivot later.
